Legends of Tomorrow - Season 1

"Legends of Tomorrow is great, just skip the first season."

While not a direct quote variations of it is one I often see. When that happens I always I always have to hold back, respect their opinion. Even if I disagree.

Season 1 really doesn't get enough credit. I've always liked the season and, one thing I've noticed, now that I'm halfway through my rewatch of the season, is it gets better with repeated viewings.

For one Sara and Mick get a lot of character development in Season 1, it's the start of the journey that turns them into the characters they eventually become. There's also all of Snart's story. Yes, he returns for a few episodes in Season 2 but it doesn't add to his story.

But also there are a lot of funny moments that get overlooked because it's in Season 1 and that's the serious season.

The majority of Snart's dialogue comes to mind. He's always making some smartass comment and I can't even pick a favourite because of that.

Space Ranger Stein is a hilarious moment where Stein reveals he always wanted to be a space ranger which Jax makes fun of him for it and later declares that Space Ranger Stein won't come to their rescue when they get captured, but that's exactly what happens. Stein takes out professional time pirates during his rescue mission. How? We don't know but it's fun.

Young Stein and his love for pot was another great moment in Season 1. Everyone loves Nate because he gets high, but Stein and Sara were the ones who started it all since the scene also involved Sara stealing young Stein's joints and later fighting while high.

But there are also serious moments that shouldn't be overlooked just because it's in Season 1.

The main one that comes to mind (at least from the first half) is when Sara is given the order by Rip to kill Stein in order to protect the future and Snart talks her out of it. This is an important scene for two reasons, 1) it shows that Sara just isn't an assassin and bloodlust was a big part of her story back then, but 2) it also shows that Snart actually cares. Besides when it comes Mick, Lisa and himself, it's one of the first times where he's obvious he's more than just a coldhearted criminal. There actually are other times when it's not so obvious. At one point Jax is hurt and he's visibly worried but you'd only notice if you were paying attention to him.

The conversation that Snart and Sara have while they're freezing to death is another really great serious moment from Season 1. While they both open up to each other, it's mostly Snart opening up to Sara, curious as to what it's like dying, revealing without being asked how he and Mick met, etc. It's another moment to show that he cares, which makes his sacrifice later more sense.

There's also the fact that Rip's love for his wife and child makes his sacrifice in Season 3 more special. I love Rip but I think he has the least sad death of all since he's going to be reunited with his family. Neither Snart or Stein got that, they just died, leaving everyone they loved behind.

I could go on but this really is turning into an "I miss Snart and Stein" pity post. But it's hard not to miss them when watching Season 1, knowing what happens to them.

I might as well say it though, even the Hawks and Savage aren't as bad as they use to be.
